A Woman Ahead of Her Time
Salt + Light Television takes a look at Mary MacKillop: Australia’s First Saint
TORONTO, August 1, 2009 – Mary MacKillop was among the key patron saints of World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney, and is the subject of the upcoming Salt + Light Television Special: Mary MacKillop: Australia’s First Saint. The special premieres on the Canadian specialty network on Saturday August 8th at 9:00pm ET, with repeat broadcasts on Sunday August 9th 1:30pm and Tuesday August 11th at 8:30pm.
Following World Youth Day in Sydney, two Salt + Light producers – Mary Rose Bacani and Kris Dmytrenko – followed in the footsteps of Blessed Mary MacKillop with the intention of sharing her story through film. Her story includes the great legacy of Australia’s Catholic Education system, the founding of the Sisters of St. Joseph and even an excommunication by the local bishop who later reversed his mistake.
Mary Rose and Kris speak with the Archbishop of Adelaide, Archbishop Philip Wilson; the former Auxiliary Bishop of Adelaide, Bishop Gregory O’Kelly; Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart; and young people who have felt the impact of Blessed Mary MacKillop on their lives.
“She is our star, but she’s our star by the quality of her ability to love, and her ability to forgive, and to trust God and move ahead. She’s a star because she used every piece of human talent and ability that she had to get on with her work and to remain faithful to that work even in the midst of great difficulty.” Says Most Rev. Philip Wilson, Archbishop of Adelaide.
